Staged Development

Staged Development

Melbourne Docklands is being developed in stages to create a sustainable, mixed use community where people can live, work, invest and visit.

VicUrban, the Victorian Government’s sustainable urban development agency, is leading the development of Docklands in a strategically managed process based on market demand.

The development strategy for Docklands is an ever-evolving one, being continually reviewed and refined to meet the needs of the local community as it develops.

Docklands is being developed in partnership between the government and the private sector.

Although Docklands is state-owned land, its development is being funded by private companies. The Victorian government lends VicUrban the finance to build roads, bridges, tramlines and wharves to help attract private developers.

Carefully selected developers sign contracts to develop their precinct and then pay the state government for parcels of land for development. Eventually, these payments will repay the cost of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, tramlines, which have been provided by the Government through VicUrban.
